Anza-Borrego put on quite a show this wildflower season-the best in years.
On this day in March, I found Desert Sunflowers (yellow), Birdcage Evening Primrose (white), Beavertail Cactus (hot pink), California Dodder (the orange spaghetti looking stuff, which is a parasitic plant), Sand Verbenia and Lupine (purple).
That's Brown-eyed Evening Primose pictured with the fat & ugly White-lined Sphinx moth larva. Not only do they squish green, they can also ooze green when alarmed from their mouths. Sexy bitches. Yuck, those suckers emerge from underground after turning into a moth. They are one of the largest flying insects in the desert. We used to have a turtle that went after those suckers with great voracity . Kinda like Andrew Zimmerman...
